Calculate the loads a structure must resist, including its own weight, occupants and furniture, vehicles, wind, rain, flooding, soil pressure, vibration, and—where relevant—earthquake or snow loads.
Design structural systems and elements such as foundations, columns, beams, slabs, floors, roofs, trusses, retaining walls, shear walls, and connections.
Select and specify suitable materials, commonly reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, masonry, and composite systems, considering strength, cost, durability, constructability, and environmental exposure.
