Core Duties and Responsibilities
Preparing patients and treatment rooms (seating patients, reviewing medical history, taking vital signs in some cases, ensuring comfort).
Sterilizing instruments and maintaining infection control.
Assisting the dentist during procedures by handing instruments, using suction, mixing materials, and keeping the field clear (“four-handed dentistry”).
Taking and processing dental X-rays (where permitted by state law).
Taking impressions, applying fluoride or sealants, placing temporary restorations, or performing other limited clinical duties (expanded functions vary by state and certification).
Educating patients on oral hygiene, post-procedure care, and home care instructions.
