Core responsibilities:
Conduct psychiatric evaluations and diagnose mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, etc.)
Prescribe and manage medications (antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, etc.)
Develop treatment plans, often combining medication with therapy
Provide psychotherapy (some do this themselves; others refer to psychologists/therapists)
Order and interpret lab tests, brain scans, or psychological assessments to rule out physical causes
Monitor patients for medication side effects and adjust treatment.
