Crane Operator

Core responsibilities / duties

Plan lifts by reviewing lift plans, weight charts, and rigging requirements.
Set up, level, and stabilize crane per manufacturer specs and site conditions.
Operate crane controls to hoist, swing, travel, and place loads precisely and safely.
Coordinate with ground crew, signal person(s), riggers, and site supervisors.
Inspect crane daily and complete inspection logs; identify/report defects and perform basic maintenance.
Select and rig slings, shackles, hooks, and other rigging gear; verify load securement and center-of-gravity.
Ensure safe working radius, outrigger placement, and compliance with lift charts and load moment indicators.

Essential skills and competencies

Proficient crane control operation, load reading, spatial awareness, and precise placement.
Strong communication and teamwork—ability to follow and give hand signals and radio communication.
Basic mechanical aptitude for simple troubleshooting and maintenance.
Ability to read load charts, site drawings, and rigging diagrams.
Attention to detail, patience, and risk awareness.
