Psychiatrist

Specializes in mental health — unlike psychologists or counsellors, they can diagnose mental illness, prescribe medication, and manage both the psychological and physical aspects of disorders.

Core Job Purpose: Assess, diagnose, treat and prevent mental, emotional and behavioural disorders through clinical evaluation, psychotherapy, medication management, and coordination of care, conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations: interviews, mental status exams, medical/psychosocial history from patients, family and other  professionals also handle psychiatric emergencies, assess suicide/self-harm risk, authorize involuntary admission when legally required.

Qualifications: High school Diploma or equivalent is required, medical expertise + strong pharmacology knowledge, emotional intelligence, empathy, non-judgmental listening and communication, documentation, ethical judgment, confidentiality.
