Core Responsibilities
Operating drilling equipment — running the rig, controlling drill speed, pressure, and depth
Rig setup and teardown — assembling drilling equipment, pipes, and tools at the site
Monitoring drilling parameters — tracking pressure, fluid levels, rotation speed, and torque to avoid blowouts or equipment failure
Managing drilling fluid (“mud”) — maintaining the right mud weight/composition to control pressure and remove cuttings
Supervising crew — directing roughnecks, derrickhands, and other rig crew members
Interpreting geological data — working with geologists/engineers to adjust drilling based on subsurface conditions
Safety compliance — enforcing safety protocols, handling emergency well-control situations.
