Key responsibilities includes:
Read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications.
Prepare worksite: set out lines/levels, build scaffolding, and install formwork or temporary supports.
Mix mortar or prepare other bonding materials to required consistency.
Lay bricks, concrete blocks, natural or manufactured stone in straight lines and even courses using string lines and spirit levels.
Cut and shape masonry units to fit openings, corners and architectural details.
Point and finish joints (flush, concave, struck, raked) and apply sealants or surface treatments.
Build and repair walls, partitions, arches, chimneys, retaining walls, piers, and other structures.
Required technical skills such as: Proficiency in reading blueprints, levels, and layout marks.
Knowledge of mortar mixes, curing times and bonding techniques.
Competence with hand and power tools: trowels, jointers, brick hammers, chisels, block saws, mixers, levels, laser levels, scaffolding components.
Understanding of structural reinforcement, flashing, weep holes and damp-proofing.
