Welder

Performs welding and fabrication tasks to join, cut, and finish metal parts according to blueprints, work orders, and safety standards. Uses appropriate welding processes and inspection methods to ensure structural integrity and code compliance.

Core duties & responsibilities

Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and dimensions.
Select, set up, and operate welding equipment (SMAW/Stick, GMAW/MIG, FCAW, GTAW/TIG, oxy-fuel).
Prepare surfaces: clean, bevel, fit, tack-weld, and align components.
Perform welds on steel, stainless, aluminum, and other alloys.
Perform pipe fitting and welding where applicable (orbital, MIG, TIG for pipes).
Inspect welds visually and with nondestructive testing (NDT) methods or assist inspectors (dye penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic).
Grind, finish, and dress welds to required tolerances.
Maintain welding machines, torches, fixtures, and PPE in safe working order.

Required skills & competencies

Proficiency in one or more welding processes: SMAW, GMAW (MIG), FCAW, GTAW (TIG).
Ability to read/interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and templates.
Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and attention to detail.
Basic math and measurement skills (tolerances, angles, radii).
Knowledge of metallurgy and filler material selection.
