Operates hydraulic excavators (mini, midi, standard, long‑reach) to dig trenches, foundations, grading, demolition, material handling, and site preparation according to plans and safety rules. Works with foremen, surveyors, and ground crew to complete earthmoving tasks efficiently and safely.
Core duties & responsibilities
Read site plans, stakes, and grade/benchmark information; follow instructions from superintendent or foreman.
Operate excavator to dig trenches, basements, footings, drainage, slopes, and backfill.
Load/unload trucks, place pipe and materials, break concrete with attachments, and perform limited lifting within machine ratings.
Select and change attachments (buckets, thumbs, hydraulic breakers, augers, grapples) and adjust machine settings.
Perform pre‑shift and post‑shift inspections; report defects; do basic maintenance (grease, check fluids, clean filters).
Protect utilities and work around underground lines; work with spotters/locators.
Required skills & attributes:
Proven ability to safely operate excavators (mini to standard sizes) and attachments.
Good spatial awareness and hand‑eye coordination.
Ability to read simple plans, levels, and grades; use basic surveying/laser grade tools is a plus.
Strong communication and teamwork; able to work with spotters and flaggers.
Physical stamina and ability to climb in/out of cab frequently.
Problem solving — identify soft/unstable soils, adjust technique, protect machinery.
