A Pediatric Nurse (also called a Children’s Nurse or Peds RN) is a registered nurse who specializes in caring for infants, children, and adolescents (typically from birth to age 18). They provide age-appropriate medical care, support healthy development, and work closely with families.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Pediatric nurses adapt standard nursing care to children’s developmental stages, sizes, and communication abilities. Common responsibilities include:
Performing age-appropriate physical assessments and taking medical histories (often from parents/caregivers as well as the child).
Monitoring vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, breathing, oxygen saturation) and watching for pediatric-specific signs of deterioration (e.g., using tools like the Pediatric Early Warning Score).
Administering medications, vaccinations, IV fluids, and treatments—frequently using weight-based dosing.
Drawing blood, collecting samples, and assisting with or monitoring diagnostic tests and procedures.
