Job summary
Mix mortar, cement, and grout to correct consistency; select appropriate materials for the job.
Lay bricks, blocks, and stone in straight lines and level courses using trowels, levels, plumb rules, and masonry strings.
Cut and shape masonry units using chisels, saws, grinders, and jointers.
Install reinforcement (rebar, anchors) and grout where required.
Point, repoint, and finish joints to specified appearance and weatherproofing.
Repair and restore damaged masonry (patching, tuckpointing, replacing units).
Inspect completed work, correct defects, and ensure compliance with plans and codes.
Maintain tools and equipment; keep work area clean and safe.
Required skills and attributes
Good understanding of mathematics (measuring, leveling, calculating materials).
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings.
Knowledge of masonry materials, mortars, adhesives, and curing methods.
Physical stamina: lift heavy materials, kneel, bend, work at heights for extended periods.
Attention to detail and ability to produce uniform, neat work.
Problem-solving, time management, and ability to work independently or in teams.
