Core purpose:
Prepare drilling programs: well path, casing design, mud program, cementing, BHA selection, bit program.
Perform risk assessments, HAZID/HAZOP and pre‑job safety reviews.
Design and specify casing, cementing, tubulars and wellhead/BOP requirements.
Create and maintain drilling schedules and budgets; monitor cost and time metrics.
Monitor real‑time drilling data (ROP, torque, drag, pressures); diagnose issues (stuck pipe, lost circulation, kicks).
Implement well control procedures and respond to downhole incidents.
Coordinate with drilling contractors, service companies (MWD/LWD, directional drilling, mud), supply chain.
Required education & skills
Bachelor’s in Petroleum, Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering, Drilling engineering fundamentals (hydraulics, torque/drag, well stability, cementing).
Well design and directional drilling knowledge.
Software: well planning and reporting tools (examples: Landmark/WellPlan/OpenWells/WellView, Pason, Schlumberger drilling tools), basic subsurface tools (Petrel/Techlog if interfacing), MS Excel (advanced), data visualization.
Familiarity with MWD/LWD, BHA design, drilling fluid systems, and rig equipment.
