Painter

Read work orders, blueprints, or specifications and estimate materials/time.
Prepare surfaces (power washing, scraping, sanding, caulking, filling, priming).
Mix, match, thin, and apply paints, stains, varnishes, and other coatings by brush, roller, or spray.
Set up and operate ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and spray equipment safely.
Protect surrounding areas (masking, drop cloths) and clean up after jobs.
Inspect finished work for uniformity, defects, and proper adhesion; touch up as needed.
Follow safety rules, use PPE, and comply with hazardous-materials regulations (lead, solvents).

Typical skills & competencies:  

Technical: surface prep, brushing/rolling/spraying, color matching, knowledge of primers/topcoats and specialty coatings.
Tools: brushes, rollers, paint sprayers, sanders, grinders, pressure washers, caulking guns, lifts/scaffolding.
Safety: fall protection, respirators, ventilation, safe handling/disposal of solvents and lead-containing materials.
